A platform-edge stretch bar is an ultra-wide LCD display mounted above platform screen doors (PSD) or along the platform canopy. It shows dynamic line maps, crowding levels, next-stop information and approaching train alerts in a format that spans the full width of the door zone.
Native stretched-bar LCD panels — purpose-built for the ultra-wide aspect ratios (16:3 / 16:4.5 / 32:5) that platform deployments demand. The distinction is a manufacturing one, and it decides depth, cost and who warrants the glass.
Three ways to get a bar-shaped screen
Every ultra-wide display on the market took one of three routes out of the factory. They look similar on a rendering and behave very differently on a platform.
Produced ultra-wide on the panel line: sealed on all four edges by the maker, with the driver ICs and backlight laid out for that geometry. The common native resolutions we build — 1920×360, 1920×540 and 3840×600 — are only a starting list; we produce bar panels across a range of native resolutions and build to a custom stretched-bar resolution on request. Normal panel-maker warranty and supply.
A standard panel physically cut down, re-sealed and re-bonded to a new driver board. It is a real industry practice and it unlocks any dimension you like — but the new cut edge and the re-attached driver become failure points the original panel never had, and the panel maker's warranty does not follow the glass.
A whole 16:9 panel with content in a central strip and black above and below, hidden behind an apertured fascia. Cheapest to source — but you buy and power screen area nobody sees, and the enclosure keeps the full 16:9 height. Above a PSD frame that headroom usually is not there.
We build route 01. It is the only one of the three where the aspect ratio is a property of the glass rather than a compromise around it — which is what keeps a door-zone bar slim enough to clear the PSD frame. Where a project genuinely needs a dimension no native panel covers, we will say so and price route 02 honestly instead of quietly shipping it.
A practical procurement test, whoever you buy from: ask for the native resolution and the panel part number, and ask whether the panel is factory-sealed on all four edges. A letterboxed unit cannot quote a bar resolution; a cut panel cannot quote an unbroken factory seal.

One line high, and a door zone wide.
A 16:3 canvas is only about a fifth as tall as it is wide, so there is almost no room to stack. Content has to run horizontally: one line diagram, one next-stop line, a row of door markers, a crowding strip. Anything that wants rows and columns belongs on a departure board, not here.
Which is why a bar is specified backwards from a normal screen. Start with the clear headroom above the PSD frame or under the canopy, subtract bezel and mounting hardware, and what is left is the usable display height — often little more than one primary line plus a secondary one. Diagonal is the last number you pick, not the first.

The x-height arithmetic is set out on the Platform pillar page (DIN 1450). What matters here is the distance: a passenger waiting at the door stands roughly 1–3 m from the bar, not thirty metres down a concourse. Apply the same ratios at 3 m and the minimum x-height lands near 8 mm, or about 11–14 mm where reduced acuity is expected — small enough that a short bar height genuinely works, which is exactly why this format survives in a place with no headroom.
Door positions, stopping-car markers and which side opens are decided by the signalling and PIS systems. We supply the layer that shows them: a feed arrives over HDMI, LAN or serial, and the panel renders it brightly and without lag.
We do not provide — and do not claim — any safety-related function. PSD interlocking and any door-state indication carrying a safety integrity requirement sit with the signalling supplier. If a project intends a screen to form part of a safety function, that has to be assessed at system level by the integrator; our unit is an information display, and we would rather be clear about that up front than discover it at commissioning.

Are they sunlight readable on platforms?
Brightness is specified by position: 500–1,000 nits indoors, 1,500–2,500 under a sheltered canopy and 2,500–5,000 where the platform edge is genuinely exposed — all with anti-glare glass and ambient auto-dimming, which also protects the backlight and cuts night-time energy.

Can we keep our current PIS?
Yes. Open HDMI/LAN/serial interfaces connect to any PIS controller; no locked software.

How do I tell a native bar panel from a cut-down one?
Ask two questions of any supplier. First, the native resolution and panel part number — a native bar panel quotes something like 1920×360 or 3840×600, while a letterboxed unit can only quote a 16:9 resolution with a masked strip. Second, whether the glass is factory-sealed on all four edges — a cut-and-re-sealed panel is not, and the panel maker's warranty no longer follows it. Both answers should be on the datasheet, not in an email.

Can the bar indicate platform screen door status?
It can display door and stopping-position information that your signalling or PIS system sends it — that is ordinary content over HDMI, LAN or serial. What it is not is a safety device: we provide no safety-related function and claim no safety integrity level. PSD interlocking and any safety-rated door-state indication remain with the signalling supplier, and any intent to make a screen part of a safety function needs a system-level assessment by the integrator.
